FAQs
What is PTFE made of?
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a kind of vinyl polymer and is a form of plastic. The polymer is formed by means of a chemical reaction, which works by combing particles into groups of repeating large molecules. PTFE is the polymerised form of a component known as tetrafluoroethylene. PTFE is the most flexible fluoropolymer of its kind, and also has the broadest temperature resistance of any fluoropolymer. The material was the original Teflon material, and is highly resistant to corrosive liquids and gases, even at very high heats.
What is PTFE in cookware?
PTFE is used widely as a non-stick coating on cookware, such as pots and pans. The material is a type of synthetic chemical known as polytetrafluoroethylene, which is made of fluorine atoms and carbon. When used in cookware as a coating, PTFE has a smooth, non-stick surface with a very low coefficient of friction. It is also non-toxic and FDA compliant, making it suitable for use in food preparation. PTFE coatings make cooking easy and quick and are considered safe for home cooking at moderate temperatures.
Is PTFE toxic?
PTFE is FDA approved, which means that it is considered safe to use. At temperatures above 300 degrees Celsius, PTFE coatings can begin to break down, causing toxic chemicals to be released into the air. That said, normal cooking techniques are highly unlikely to cause this issue, and using non-stick cookware for the preparation of food is generally very safe and healthy. In fact, PTFE makes cooking and washing up very easy and convenient because of its smooth finish and low friction. For this reason, it is used widely as a non-stick coating on pots and pans.
